33% year over year for approximately 9.5 million in total, bringing the installed base to 21.4 million units.

Three-quarters of the units shipped in the US were NFC-capable, versus 80% in Europe. By year’s end, the US had 17% of the worldwide total, or 3.7 million. Berg Insight predicts the installed NFC terminal base will grow 28.4% a year to 74.9 million devices by the end of 2019, which means the%age of NFC-enabled POS terminals worldwide will climb to 70% from 28% in 2014.

Meanwhile, Berg Insight estimates the number of POS terminals worldwide accepting contactless payments at the end of 2014 was 9 million, up 300% in two years, and 42% of the year-end installed base of NFC-capable POS devices.

“The data show that merchants have started to embrace NFC, which up until now has been a missing piece in the puzzle,” says Berg Insight analyst Lars Kurkinen.
