INTRODUCTION

Ireland is divided between the Republic of Ireland, an independent state and a parliamentary democracy, and Northern Ireland, a constituent country of the UK. The Republic of Ireland joined the European Union in 1973 and joined the euro zone in 1999.

The Irish payment landscape was traditionally dominated by cash and cheque usage, but in recent years payment card development has driven the shift to electronic payments. Debit cards are the preferred form of payment card, and debit cards are primarily fuelling usage of contactless payment in Ireland, thanks to widespread POS terminal infrastructure development in recent years.

Mobile payment services like Apple Pay and Google Pay continue to grow in popularity, although Irish banks have joined forces to develop their own scheme under the name of Synch Payments. Ireland is also heavily promoting itself as a FinTech hub to encourage investment, particularly in the wake of Brexit leading FinTechs to leave the UK and establish European operations in Ireland.

The adoption of the revised Payment Services Directive, PSD2, and disruptive technologies have set the stage for digital payments for the digital economy in Ireland. They have accelerated digital payment transformation and mobile payment services, as well as cardless IBAN-based payments directly from bank accounts.

In the last decade, Irish consumers have embraced mobile devices such as tablets, smartphones and Internet of Things (IoT). This change significantly impacts their shopping experience. Consumers have become increasingly connected and they have started to purchase anywhere, at any time, from any device.

In addition, new consumer demands are a game changer. Irish consumers like digital banking apps with access to all their accounts at different banks in one single app, with the option to make payments directly from their bank account of choice. Additionally, they appreciate more banking services and payment services added to their mobile banking app. Consumer adoption of digital payments in Ireland is driven by minimal cost, secure payments and a high level of user convenience.
