High Demand Fintech Skills for 2022

Last year was a bumper year for investment in the UK Fintech sector: 603 deals were completed in 2021, compared to 470 in 2020 – representing a 28% increase. Additionally, KPMG’s Pulse of Fintech reported that the total investment accounted to $37.3 billion in 2021 – up from $5.2 billion in 2020.

Senior Software Engineer, ClearBank

The Company: The first new clearing bank in the UK in more than 250 years, ClearBank’s aim is to create a new level of open competition and transparency within the financial services marketplace. ClearBank is neutral, independent and is not constrained by legacy infrastructure.

The Role: The Senior Software Engineer is a contract role and will be responsible for the design and delivery of new software products. You should excel in working with large-scale applications and frameworks and have outstanding communication and leadership skills. Clearbank is big on ownership and accountability, so experience of working in an environment where you are responsible for your code all the way through to monitoring it in production will be a big plus.

You’ll Need: You’ll be proficient in C# (.NET), automated testing, databases (ClearBank mainly uses Azure SQL and Cosmos DB), messaging systems (Azure Service Bus and Event Grid) and microservices architecture and related patterns.

AML Investigator – Financial Crime, Monzo

The Company: Monzo was one of the earliest of a number of new app-based challenger banks in the UK and was originally a mobile app and a prepaid debit card. Now it’s an online bank with a full current account, and has over four million customers.

The Role: ​​The bank is looking for an AML Investigator who loves solving problems and keeping up-to-date with the latest financial crime trends. A holistic understanding of financial crime teams, typologies, and task types is required to perform as part of the financial crime team. You’ll be working together to address money laundering, sanctions breaches, terrorist financing, fraud, bribery, corruption, tax evasion, and more. The role is remote, but you can also be based in the company’s Cardiff office.

You’ll Need: You’ll have previous experience working in operational financial crime – or will have other relevant experience that Monzo should consider. You will also have a keen interest in current anti-money laundering trends and typologies, will enjoy solving problems and be comfortable making judgement-based decisions in a changing environment.

Information Security Manager, OakNorth Bank

The Company: OakNorth Bank is a UK bank for small and medium-sized companies which provides business and property loans. It gained regulatory approval in early 2015.

The Role: The Information Security Manager will drive security engineering and architecture with the developers/engineering teams to embed security earlier in the lifecycle with approved design patterns. You will drive data-centric security architecture for the company, aligned with cybersecurity frameworks such as NIST, and execute programs focused on the data-centric security charter. Additionally, you’ll drive the security awareness charter for the bank.

You’ll Need: At least 10 years of experience in various cybersecurity domains, emphasising architecture, cloud security, and risk management, as well as excellent hands-on experience in security design architecture, cloud security architecture and driving security programs, including crisis simulation exercises and awareness programs. You should hold certifications such as CISSP, CISM, and cloud security certifications.
