The French domestic card scheme, Groupement des Cartes Bancaires (CB), is planning to introduce biometric payment based on fingerprints before the end of 2014.
CB is working with the National Security Alliance industry body in order to introduce chip-based biometric functionality embedded into a keyfob, and has also outlined plans to integrate chips into micro-SD cards of mobile phones at a later date. Biometric data will be integrated into the chip as opposed to a central database.
CB’s network comprises 61.7 million cards, 58,624 ATMs and 1.3 million merchants. Around 10 billion card transactions worth a total of €524 billion passed through its network in 2013.
