Historically a credit card market, debit card use has grown through the domestic Laser debit card scheme. In 2018, more than 33% of card payments by volume were contactless.

Irish banks replaced domestic Laser cards mainly with VISA Debit cards (also: Debit Mastercard cards).

Card issuance and acquiring is dominated by the two large Irish banking groups, Bank of Ireland and Allied Irish Banks (AIB).

The Irish are among the heaviest users of cash and cheques in Europe. Stamp duty on debit and credit cards has held back the development of the card market.

Ireland intends to be leading FinTech hub in Europe.
