Payment Organization 

German Banking Industry Committee (GBIC) is the umbrella organisation of the German banks regarding payment services. 

Domestic Card Brand 

girocard debit cards with e-purse function GeldKarte; most girocards are co-badged Maestro, V PAY, Cirrus, Plus or (few) JCB. 

Market Structure 

  • Decentralized infrastructure composed of more than 30 issuers, 16 active acquirers, eight card processors, 19 German specific POS network processors (“Netzbetreiber”) and four ATM networks. 
  • Since 2007, POS use is higher than ATM use. Use of credit cards and delayed debit cards remains low compared with debit cards. 
  • German girocard debit cards compete with card-initiated ELV direct debits used by retailers and at petrol stations. 
  • girocard debit acquiring is separate from credit card acquiring. 
  • In June 2014, six German banking associations built a new joint venture for internet payments and mobile payments, paydirekt. 
  • A consolidation phase for mobile payment initiatives has started. 
  • Digital-only challenger banks include N26, Fidor Bank, SolarisBank, and mobile network operator Telefónica.
