REGIONAL OVERVIEW

This chapter covers topics specific to this region, the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), banking trends such as online and mobile banking, omni-channel self-service banking, NFC, biometric ID technology and authentication. Market trends – digital wallets and payments, Open Banking, Open APIs and national card schemes. Also discussed is bank ownership, investment by western banks, cross-border investment by Eurasian banks, other private investment, multilateral banks and agencies. Details of important M&As from 2004-2020 are also given.

CARDS OVERVIEW

This section is composed of comparative statistics from the issuer bank point of view including cards issued, number of payments and ATM withdrawals per country, expenditure on cards by country and a variety of per capita figures and average transaction values (ATVs).

ACCEPTANCE NETWORKS

This chapter examines card acquiring, POS acceptance and ATM acceptance across the region. Acquirer infrastructure, interchange fee arrangements, merchant service charges and ATM withdrawal charges are covered together with POS and ATM networks and terminal numbers.
